Greater investment in research, innovation and collaboration by academia and industry is needed to unlock more value from Africa’s critical mineral resources, Stellenbosch University chemical engineering associate professor and African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) geometallurgical research chair Margreth Tadie said at the Mintek-Sci 2026 conference, in Johannesburg, on October 2. In her keynote address focused on critical minerals, she said South Africa and the broader African continent had significant mineral resources but needed to strengthen the ability to process and add value to those resources.
